Burnt Paw Pads

Exercising Your Pets on Hot Ground

During the summer months, ground temperatures rise sharply and can cause serious damage to your pet’s paws. During midday sun, ground temperatures can rise to well over 40⁰C. Even 5 minutes at this heat will damage your pet’s paws.

A quick guide is to hold the back of your hand on the ground for 3 seconds. If it is all right for you then it is safe for your pets.

If your pets are burnt by the ground, please contact us so we can treat the wounds and give them pain relief.

The graphic below illustrates the difference between the ambient (air) temperature and the temperature of common ground surfaces on a warm day - these temperature increases will also be affected by factors such as sun intensity and wind.
